At the very beginning Mackay Turtle Watch Association recognised that to be fully affective in our aims, the group had to be active on two fronts. Apart from our monitoring activities collecting data and information on sea turtles in our area we also had to be active in public education activities.

We are grateful for the donations received from Queensland Ports Corporation and Coastcare, which enabled us to purchase much needed education equipment. The funding enabled us to purchase slide projector, models of turtles and nests, headline banner, display board, lap top computer, data projector, the production of a turtle brochure and associated bits and pieces for our interpretive sessions. This has all culminated with the present sponsorship from BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance and Hay Point Services that has provided us with the means of presenting this web site.

The group has a very active Education Committee, volunteers all of them. These members give up their spare time, load up their cars and travel many miles to give presentations to schools, community groups displays at community events and even presentations to local government. The presentations have been well received particularly by the schools and the education volunteers are kept very busy attending to requests. Members of the group sometimes get involved with impromptu turtle information sessions with the public while monitoring turtle activities on the beaches. If you would like to book a presentation please visit our “contact us section” or if you would like to become a volunteer please visit our “want to be a volunteer” section.
